I’d wanted to create a collection of small inconsequential things for some time when a chance conjunction of items gave me the idea for this.
Created just about entirely from scrap, scavenged or repurposed materials, it is a homage to the ‘cabinet of curiosities’ and also to Kurt Schwitters fondness for using found materials.
The collection is an ongoing project as new items are found, added and re-arranged (see Georges Perec on cataloguing).
Each petri dish contains easily recognisable items or fragments alongside those that are completely obscure, and mostly that would normally be regarded as rubbish.
Any social comment to be deduced from this construction I leave to the viewer.
